Assessing the Government of Canada’s COVID-19 Response

The governments’ response to COVID-19 was unprecedented not only in its nature, but also its impact on citizens around the world. Many Canadians have called for an official evaluation of the governments’ actions over the past four years. Citizen led inquiries have begun the process of a transparent examination, but lack the legal rigor to require witnesses to testify. Dr. Steven Pelech highlights some of the concerning issues revealed through assessments from a variety of sources, supporting the need for an independent and transparent inquiry. A nonpartisan evaluation is essential to prevent repeating the mistakes of recent years and for accountability. However, accountability for future responses to public health emergencies may not be possible as the Canadian government will acquiesce to the dictates of unelected officials in the World Health Organization by approving international health agreements.
