It may be surprising to many that the COVID-19 response was largely directed by individuals and corporations with ideological and financial interests independent of public welfare. As public institutions become increasingly dependent on private funding, there has been a blurring of the boundaries between regulatory, political and corporate interests. This creates a potential shift,  prioritizing interests from the public to those of the private sector.
